Bento Dictionary #1

Hey! I was looking through my bento journal the other day and saw my list of bento definitions. Some people might not know what gyoza or nigiri-zushi is, so here goes.

bento box: Japanese lunch box

tamagoyaki: rolled omelet

musubi: two flavors joined, e.g rice and salmon

nori: toasted seaweed sheets, used for rolling sushi and decorating onigiri. And eating.

udon: thick ramen noodles

gyoza: dumplings or potstickers

miso: paste made from soybean compound. Salty and flavorful.

onigiri: rice balls, sometimes stuffed with things like salmon or meats.

Hey! My school started today (a week earlier than the public schools, ugh!) and I ate my first bento before I could snap a picture of it! Sorry, but it was so cute! Here, I 'll explain it:

It had 3 bite-sized onigiri filled with smoked salmon and my home-made furikake(yum!)...

two pieces of tamagoyaki nigiri-zushi...

one piece of smoked salmon nigiri-zushi (both hand-made)...

blueberries with cutesy food picks...

gyoza(from Wild Wok, SO good)...

and some cucumber and carrot. Not good for the new-fangled braces, but muy delicioso, carrots be. Hehe.

Anyways, now I have to post the terrible pictures that I took with a phone of my second. Bento box. Ever.

a more traditional bento's first layer.

leftovers! tofu-ginger-yummy stir-fry.

and last but not least...

the very, very cute sauce bottles. hiding in the flour jar.
